Wine Regions:

Although most of the vine varieties cultivated here today were originally imported, up to now six local crossings have been released. The best known of these is a red variety, Pinotage, a cross between Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsaut), which more recently is being cultivated locally on a fairly large scale.

The Stellenbosch region has the most vineyard plantings with 16.5%, followed by Paarl (16.2%), Breedekloof (14.1%), Robertson (14%), Swartland (13.6%), Olifants River (9.7%), Worcester (7.1%), Northern Cape (3.5%), Cape South Coast (2.9%), and Klein Karoo (2.4%).

The Breedekloof region currently produces the most wine (19.8%), followed by Robertson (17.3%), Olifants River (14.6%), Worcester (13.5%), Paarl (10.1%), Swartland (8.5%), Stellenbosch (7.1%), Northern Cape (5.9%), Klein Karoo (2.2 %) and Cape South Coast (1%).
